Attack was and still is one of the best punk bands ever. They rock! The band is one of the greatest bands to come out of the '70s. They appeared on No Future records and actually had strong sales then the Sex Pistols release on the same label and a much better 7". The band has since stop playing shows, but they Gary from the band still supports their fans and has built a strong fan base from the newer UK punk scene, all thru their website. Due to health issues I don't think they will play a show anytime soon, but we have 2 7" EPs and an LP, plus Gary appears on a Blitz LP as well. I got Gary to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
Hi, my name is Gary, I was the singer and guitarist of the punk band Attak.
How did the band start?
A lot of bands were starting up at this time, we used to watch Blitz
practice and a few of us decided to give it a go.
How did you come up with the name?
I suppose you could say it came from Blitz's All Out Attack, just spelt
slightly differently.
Who would you say were your influences?
Pistols, Ramones, Blitz, Clash etc etc...
What was the punk scene like in 1981?
Raw and fast.
How do you feel it has changed?
Greatly, but we are a lot older after all.
Describe the song writing process…
Lyrics, music, done!
Your first release was a demo, tell us about the demo…
Our first release was the track ‘Blue Patrol’ on the ‘A Country Fit For
Heroes’ compilation, the song came from a demo we had done.
Your tracks ‘Blue Patrol’ on the ‘A Country Fit For Heroes’ compilation
and ‘Big Brother’ on the ‘Oi! Oi! That’s Yer Lot’ compilation, tell us
about the songs…
Blue Patrol came about as we never got along with our local Police force
and Big Brother came from the book 1984 by George Orwell.
You guys at that point had a deal with No Future Records, what was it
like working with them?
Pretty good, we just got on with it.
In 1982, you released the ‘Today’s Generation’ 7”, tell us about the 7”…
Just a few of our favourite tracks at the time, we were busy writing as
much as possible for the upcoming album.
That same year you released the ‘Murder in the Subway’ 7”, how do you
feel it differed from the first?
It was a bit heavier, and more polished.
In 1983, you released your first and only album ‘Zombies’, it is a damn
great album, tell us about the album…
It was much fun to make, done over 3 nights and a lot of tea drank, we
were completely happy with the way it turned out.
Why did the band split in 1984?
We were all growing up and going our separate ways, Lindsay was
expecting our first child and we called it a day.
What else have you guys released?
I did the vocals on Blitz's Killing Dream album but thats all.
Tell us about the current lineup…
There is no current line up and hasn't been since we split in 1984.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Blitz, and a few more from the No Future label.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
We preferred smaller places.
Have you toured?
No.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
The local bands at the time.
Is there a favourite place you like to do shows at?
We used to like the local clubs.
What do you see is the future of Attak?
As we split in 1984 there has been "No Future" for Attak since then, how
apt.
How can people contact the band?
Through the Attak website http://www.attak.co.uk/
