Moovalya ***New Interview***

Moovalya is great punk from Pheonix. They have a great EP out and the they have done a lot of great shows. I got the band to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…
Moovalya is a 3 piece indie punk band from the scorching desert of Phoenix, AZ.
How did the band start?
We formed on New Year's Eve in a Tropicana casino cocktail lounge. After a few drinks and reminiscing about playing hometown shows in high school, the decision was made to start a new band by the name of "MOOVALYA."
How did you come up with the name?
Moovalya is the name of the river in the small town of Parker, AZ where we grew up. It hits home, and is pronounced MOVE-ALL-YA, so it's got a cool double meaning.
Who would you say are your influences?
Growing up, we were heavily influenced by the Southern California punk rock and skate scene, and are now working on a sound that breaks through the new indie punk wave.
What is the punk scene like in Phoenix?
The scene is alive and well here in Phoenix. There was a downfall a couple of years back, but we can already notice the underground churning again and there have been a lot of great shows out here lately.
What is the song writing process?
We used to write on our own, and fuse all of our ideas together, but our newest stuff that we are excited to record soon in March was written as a whole, and has an awesome new feel to it.
In 2009, you released a self-titled album, tell us about the album…
The S/T release started out more as pre-production as we wanted to get our name out around town. We got it done about a week before our first show as we were re-releasing ourselves into the wild and people were responding to it well, so we ended up releasing it as our first.
In 2010, you released the ‘First Degree’ EP, tell us about the EP…
'First Degree' was our first professional recording and we are definitely proud of as it has received great reviews, airplay, and recognition in some cool places around the world. We released music videos for "She Will Bleed" and "Overdrive" from the EP and it even contains a song ("Hail to the Hearts") that we decided we wanted to re-record from our 2009 release.
Tell us about the lineup…
Ben (Guitar/Vocals) and myself (Sean - Bass/Vocals) formed this band before we had a drummer, recording songs in an apartment on a crappy PC. We went through a few drummers playing locally in Phoenix before finding the right one in 2010, Mitch, who we picked up a week before going into the studio as a session drummer to record the 'First Degree' EP and he's stuck around ever since.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Duane Peters Gunfight is one we are most proud of, but locally some great shows have been with Stitch Hopeless & The Sea Legs, Fire to Reason, My New Vice, Labor Party, Green Lady Killers, Murder Majesty, and our good friends Contradiktion.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
It doesn't really matter where we're playing, but when it's a packed house, it always makes for a better show as the crowd and ourselves are feeding off of each other's energy. However, small clubs are cool because they're up close in personal and there's always a bunch of booze splashin' around.
Have you toured?
We've played all over AZ, started to make our way into CA, and are constructing our first consecutive West Coast tour for May of this year.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
There's not really a favorite band, but we prefer the lineup to consist of good like-genre bands. Some of the promoters like to book shows with punk, metal, hip-hop and rock all in the same night which is great for ticket sales, but sucks as a whole for a good show.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Sundance's Place in Prescott, AZ - it's nice to go up to the mountains, the people are rad, the shows are always fun, and we have a free place to crash up there. Score.
What do you see is the future of Moovalya?
We will continue to write music that we love and use it to meet great people, tour the world, and tell stories no one else can.
How can people contact the band?
http://www.moovalya.com/ (join the mailing list) and http://www.listn.to/moovalya are the best ways to stay "in the know" about Moovalya
