Darkest Hour is a band from the old Mp3.com days. The band has since moved on to form other bands.
When I first heard Darkest Hour, I liked it. It had a New York hardcore feel, but in a Bad Brains (s/t album) sort of way. I decided that this would be an awesome band to interview. I finally got Garrity the guitar player for the band to answer some interview questions.
How did the band start?
General Schleibaum and Colonel Henry started the band about seven years ago with a different drummer and bass player. As time past new bros were added and suckas dismissed to form the well oiled party thrash machine that is Darkest Hour today.
How long has the band been together?
Seven years.
How did you guys come up with the name?
The original drummer insisted we have a name by our first show and that was the only one he came up with that didn't involve our zipcode being bad ass. For example 22032 Wrecking Crew.
Tell me about the "Mark of the Judas" album...
The Judas record is a brutal mosh sesh. We like to think of that as the first Darkest Hour record because it was the first record that was close to the sound we were going for and it was also the first record with the true DH lineup. There are certain songs and things about the production that we wish weren't on the record but the kids seem to like it. I would say the Judas record has a brutality factor of at least 8. We think its pretty sick.
Did you record anything before that?
The first DH recording was a four song demo tape of which there are maybe a hundred. Then we did a six song EP entitled the Misanthrope. A friend of ours put that record out on his own label. After that we did a six song EP on Art Monk Construction entitled "The Prophecy Fulfilled" and there was also a split seven inch with Ground Zero on East Coast Empire. We were on one or two comps as well but that is pretty much everything we did before Judas.
What happened with MIA records?
Basically we recorded a record for them and the day that it came out they folded. So we had to start over. Luckly we have gotten that record back and it has since come out but it definitly was a bonder at the time!
How did you guys get involved with Victory Records?
We had a bunch of labels interested but Victory just had the best deal and seemed to be able to get us attention with both the metal heads and hardcore kids!
Tell me about "So Sedated, So Secure"...
Well we wrote the record in 3 months and recorded it in one. We tried to move forward with the progression of our sound and I think we did a good job. But we still haven't been able to capture the true sound of the Bro Down yet!
You guys have toured alot, where have you played?
Every state in the US, From the East Coast to the West coast of Canada, All the countries in Mainland Europe..
Is there a favorite place you like to play?
I personaly love Richmond Virginia!
Is there a favorite band you have played with?
One of our favorite bands to play with is Drowning Man because they can bro some dudes. Sometimes we play short sets to get the party started quicker.
You guys are from DC, what's the scene like?
Its cool there are a lot of awesome bands from up here like Majority Rule, Trial By Fire, Pg. 99, and we Love Richmond VA too.... It is like we have two home towns its great!
What would you say is the future of Darkest Hour?
Two things...touring and BROW'N DOWN!
How can people contact the band?
You can contact anyone in Darkest Hour through our website at www.darkesthour.cc. Just click on the bro you want to contact and you can send an email to book a brutal mosh sesh or arrange a sick hang sesh.
