Die Pretty ***New Interview***

Die Pretty is a power-pop punk band out of New York. Mixed between the NYHC scene and the indie rock scene that is currently over taking the scene due to the lost of some great venues. As a band they have put out some great stuff and bring a lot of energy to the stage. I got skip to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…
hello, my name is Skip and I am play guitar in Die pretty from Brookyn NY

How did the band start?
My sister Sarah (Vocals/Bass) and I met the other two members of the group at a coffee shop in manhattan in 2009. We had just ended another project and were writing a lot of tunes. We were actively looking for another guitar player and drummer. It just clicked when we met Angelo (drums) and Tommy (guitar).

3) How did you come up with the name?
Die Pretty is a lyric from a Bad Religion song.

Who would you say are your influences?
We grew up listening to So Cal Bay area punk bands like Pennywise, Suicide Machines, Rancid, Goldfinger, Green Day, Social D etc..

What is the punk scene like in New York?
The scene has kinda been forgotten with the new indie and alternative rock happening around town. There is always a small scene for punk, but its def on the backburner now. Hopefully it will come back around.

Describe the song writing process...
We always start with a melody first, then we build the song idea and lyrics around it.

Your first release was 'Bittersweet', tell us about the album...
Bittersweet was very Punk/Rock driven and thats sort of where the band met artistically when we formed. It was picked up overseas and released by a small indie label in Germany. They have a big punk scene over that way and it was well received.

You then released, the 'Die Pretty' EP, tell us about the EP...
The Die Pretty EP showed a more Rock/Pop side to the band. We started experimenting with some new wave types of sounds like loops and effects (you can hear in Medicated Nation) Bands experiment and change, its a natural and organic process, its also bound to happen. So we kept a lot of our fundamentals on this EP as well as experiment with a new direction.

Your current release is 'Battle Over Brooklyn', tell us about the album...
These are our latest songs that we recorded here in Brooklyn this year. It has a little taste of our previous work as well as some new sounds that we wanted to put out.

What else have you released?
The 3 releases are:
Bittersweet 2009
Die Pretty EP 2010
Battle Over Brooklyn 2011
We have two videos out, "Voices" and "Medicated Nation"

Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Recently we have been playing with a lot of local NYC bands, since this is our home base.

Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
You know a small venue can feel just as cool as a big venue if the crowd is into you that night. We always play to the room. So if the room is rocking that night, we are happy!

Where have you toured?
We have played East Coast only. We would love to get to the west coast or Europe soon.

Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Not particulary. As long as the bill has bands similar to our style, its a good night.

Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
We just played Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan. It was one of our most memorable shows to date.

Do you see is the future of Die Pretty?
We want to gain new fans and reach as many people with our music as we can. The internet is a powerful tool and we can def send anyone our music, but getting in front of people and playing live is still our favorite thing to do.
