Coming out strong from UK underdog scene. DUN2DEF, is a great live band that gets the crowd going. As a band they have released two live albums. They also have a ton of shows under their belt. I got the band to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
FERRET - VOCALS, ASH - LEAD GUITAR, CHRIS - RYTHM GUITAR, CHRIS B - BASS, ROB - DRUMS
How did the band start?
THE BAND WAS ORIGINALLY FORMED IN 1996 IN MILTON KEYNES AS A COVERS BAND BUT WE SOON STARTED WRITING NEW MATERIAL AND DECIDED TO DROP THE COVERS AND CONCENTRATE FULL TIME ON CREATING OUR OWN SOUND (FERRET)
You guys original formed as 77 why the name change?
77 WAS A COVERS BAND AND AS WE WERE WRITING OUR OWN MATERIAL IT SEEMED RIGHT TO CHANGE THE NAME (FERRET)
Where did you come up with the name Dun2def?
ALL OF THE GOOD NAMES FOR PUNK BANDS HAD BEEN DONE TO DEATH HENCE THE NAME. (FERRET)
Who would you say are your influences?
UK SUBS, SUBHUMANS, THE CLASH, DRONGOS FOR EUROPE, SLAUGHTER AND THE DOGS, SICK ON THE BUS, GBH TO NAME A FEW (CHRIS)
What was the punk scene like in 1996?
JUST REAWAKENING REALLY. THE FIRST HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN IN 96 SAW SLAUGHTER AND THE DOGS RIP THINGS UP AND INJECTED SOME MUCH NEEDED IMPETUS INTO THE SCENE (CHRIS)
How has it changed?
SINCE THE EARLY DAYS? THE WHOLE SCENE IS A LOT FRIENDLIER THAN IT WAS ORIGINALLY. BANDS DON'T SEE EACH OTHER AS RIVALS SO MUCH THESE DAYS AND THERES HARDLY ANY TROUBLE AT GIGS.
What is the song writing process?
WE ALL GET TOGETHER AND JAM OUT IDEAS AND FROM THAT WE USUALLY END UP WITH SOMETHING WE CAN TAKE TO A REHEARSAL STUDIO TO WORK ON (Ash)
Your first release was the ‘Bomb Squad’ EP, tell us about the EP… (It was on disclocate records released in 2001.
it was a 4 track release on 7" vinyl and CD and featured the tracks BOMB SQUAD, DON'T GIVE UP THE RIFLE, BACKGROUND NOISE AND LIGHTS OUT. Thanks to Dave and Claire by the way if they read this. We still play a couple of these songs today (Ferret)
In 2004, you released a self-titled album, tell us about the album…
We knew our bass player and founding member along with Ferret, Dave Gatiss was leaving for a new life in Canada so we wanted to record everything we had written up to that point which is why its a 16 track album. We didn't get long in the studio but we got everything we wanted on the album including a cover of the Specials Too much too young. The band on that release was Ferret - Vocals, Dave Gatiss - Bass, Mark Vickers - Drums, Twig Webley - Guitar. The album is long out of print. Even some of the current band members don't have a copy (Ferret)
Your current album is ‘Riot Torn City’, tell us about the album…
Released in 2009 it has sold really well and received some great reviews from the likes of Maximum Rock n Roll, Big Cheese, Punks and Studs and more. It marks a return to a traditional one singer line up since the departure of Jon Ellams who recorded with us on the Every Weekend album. This album is still in print (Chris)
Have you guys released anything else?
Yes the afore-mentioned EVERY WEEKEND album and numerous compilation tracks for Angry Scenes and This is Peterborough Too to name a couple. (Chris)
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
UK SUBS, PARTISANS, SLAUGHTER AND THE DOGS, SHAM 69, DEMOB, VIBRATORS, SICK ON THE BUS, VARUKERS, GBH, PTTB, LONDON, ABRASIVE WHEELS, NEWTOWN NEUROTICS, PENETRATION to name a few (Chris B)
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
We like doing both you get different atmosphere in both places but just playing live is what gets the adrenolin pumping so we could be playing in a cow shed and still have a great time (Chris)
Where have you toured?
We play regularly all over the UK and in Europe as well (Ferret)
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
WE ALWAYS LOVE PLAYING SHOWS WITH THE UK SUBS, SICK ON THE BUS, DRONGOS AND THE ABRASIVE WHEELS (ASH)
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
SAWYERS IN KETTERING NOW SADLY SHUT DOWN, THE BRIDGEHOUSE 2, THE AN CLUB IN ATHENS TO NAME A FEW (CHRIS B)
What do you see is the future of the Dun2def?
IN THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE WE GO TO BELGIUM TO PLAY WITH THE USUAL SUSPECTS AT THE BEGINNING OF MARCH THEN WE PLAY THE LEGENDARY 100 CLUB ON 24TH MARCH WITH DRONGOS AND SICK ON THE BUS AND HOPEFULLY MORE GIGS IN EUROPE. IN THE MEANTIME WE HAVE A NEW SPLIT ALBUM WITH THE DESTRUCTORS TO RECORD WHICH WILL BE OUT IN TIME FOR REBELLION. (CHRIS)
