The Guzzards ***New Interview***

The Guzzards are a great hardcore/power-pop band that has been a great part of the underdog punk scene in the UK. The band itself has been around since 2005 has played some great shows. This is a band that you really wanna see live and if you get a chance grab a copy of one of their EPs. I recently got the band to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…

We are The Guzzards. A four Piece Hard hitting Punk Rock Band From Norwich, England.
Renowned for our high energy manic shows.
Formed in March of 2005 The Guzzards consist of:
Matt (Guitar&Vox), Aaron (Guitar&Backing), Mez (Drums), Jase (Bass)

How did the band start?
Matt spent months telling Aaron to "start a band so i can join it"! Eventually Matt and his cousin Jase came together jamming in a garage old Greenday and Blink 182 covers. This led to the search for a drummer. Matt met mez unconscious in the back of somebody's car whilst catching a ride to the pub one night. Turns out the unconscious mess could play the drums. From there we organized a practice room and began blasting out cheesy covers. Soon Aaron joined in and the madness began........

How did you come up with the name?

The band was originally called "Jaded Odyssey". Probably some metal influences coming through there, still somewhat shocking by any standards.
The name "The Guzzards" came to light in the most rock and roll of circumstances....... whilst at the biggest alternative music festival in the country (Download festival at the infamous Castle Donnington), a good friend of the band who happened to be in our tent that night woke us all up by shrieking the name "the Guzzards" in his sleep post mushroom binge.
This clearly was the topic of conversation the next morning and has stuck with us ever since....

Who would you say are your influences are?

A lot of U.S punk: Rise against, Pennywise, Lagwaggon, Nofx, Misfits, H20, Sick of it all, Alkaline trio, The Lawrence arms, Offspring, Zebrahead.
Tallica, Slayer, Maiden, Have heart, Parkway drive, Wildhearts, Terrorvision.

........and cider and chebs

What is the punk scene like in the UK?
A bit odd really. For years everybody seemed to be in metal bands as the whole metalcore phenomenon caught on and in more recent years there's been a lot of hardcore bands coming through the underground that have strong punk influences and slowly over time more and more bands have kept popping up that are more punk or punk rock orientated. There's also been a pretty big pop punk movement going on in the past few years influenced by bands such as Paramore, Set Your Goals, The Wonder Years etc.

Describe the song writing process…

Well, it's probably pretty normal sounding but basically one of us come up with a riff or two or has an idea on how they envision something and from there we just jam it out over and over. A great tip to anyone who does this...RECORD THE FECKING THING! We've probably forgotten more great ideas than we use.

You guys have released a few versions of your EP, tell us about the EP…

Over the years we have recorded four Ep's. The first two we're quite happy to forget about. They were definitely part of the learning curve and have long been left behind.
The latest two Ep's were basically split into Grey conflict Parts 1&2. These were originally sold in handmade covers and soon sold out(note to any bands following this route...dont use cheap paint.we ruined a lot of handbags). After signing to Side Effect Records the two Ep's were joined and new artwork has been created and is all pending official re-release.
Currently we're recording our first album DIY style. We'll let you know how that goes.........

Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
The biggest bands are probably Fat wreck chords "Goober Patrol" and "Deadline". both awesome times we'll always remember.

Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Good friends of ours "Room 4 1 More". They live on the other side of the country but we come together regularly for a scream.great fun. check em out! Also we've played multiple shows with Fights & Fires, Darko & Dumpster Pop - all fantastic bands and great lads!

Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Our Home town hands down. We often see blood there and last time we played we had a 5 tier human pyramid, circle pits galore and some poor bugger needed 4 stitches in his head.

What do you see is the future of the Guzzards?

The Guzzards never look to far ahead. we definitely live for now. All we do know......... Is we'll be there!

How can people contact the band?‬
