Nova Express

Nova Express were at one point one of the greatest power-pop bands in the Mp3.com world. They had a great live following and some solid recordings. They have since moved on to other bands.

How long has the band been together?

About 3 years.

How did it start?

I met drummer Eric when he moved to New York in '99 and found out we both liked and played the same music.

How do you come up with the name?

its the title of a William Burroughs book. He is a famous beat poet and notorious junkie. The book's kinda about a group of ciminals and deviants roaming the countryside, I thought.. What better analogy for a rock band he died last year, actually.

Describe your music...

High energy fuel injected dirty motor city punk'n'roll.

Who are your influences?

Comix, horror, converse high tops and the MC5.

Have you guys toured?

We've done lots of bopping and weaving. We've done shows up and down the East Coast, Philly, BMore, DC, Virginia, Ohio, plus 2 trips to California, doing shows in LA, San Francisco and San Diego.

What have you recorded?

We've done 2- 4 song EPs (1 song on the international comp series Fistful of Rock'n'Roll -we're on Vol 6), plus a Dead Boys cover coming out soon on Reptilian Records. Actually we expect to be included on comps coming out this year on Twenty stone Blatt (Scotland), Devil Doll (California), Viscious Kitten(Australia) and Myrmeleceo Rekkids in Japan.

Describe the song writing process...

I dunno really, standing around strumming, bored or pissed off.... Usually I bring something in to the group, but sometimes a skeleton of an idea takes shape with the band.

Who have you guys played with?

That's an easy one- friends and komrades are and have been Candy Snatchers, Black Halos, Electric Frankenstein, Twin Six, Adam West, Mud City Manglers, Silver Tongue Devils, SuperBees, Texas Terri, and Street Walkin Cheetahs.

Is there a favorite band you liked to play with?

Electric Frankenstein and Candy Snatchers are the best

Is there a favorite place you like to play?

Hmm.. Anywhere that there's a good R'n'R crowd. Preferrably with a good amount of women and a sympathetic barmaid.... Oh and getting paid decent, please.

What is the local scene like?

Personally I don't think so it's been so great for a while now. What with clubs closing and urban rythums or fusion metal rap ruling the day... New York.. Hmm, well although I did like it-New York is still beating to death that Johnny Thunders horse. Now this is something I like but not when it's just the same exact thing with no one bringing anything NEW to the table. Some twist that they can call there own otherwise I'd just rather listen to the Heartbreakers- actually I see this kind of regurgitation in a lot of cities.

What do you see is the future of Nova Express?

We're negotiating now with a management/booking agent team- so hopefully better (paying) gigs in lot of cities and better distribution for our material.

How can people contact you guys?
