Truro is another great band exploiting out of the UK punk scene. With an EP release on Big Cartel and a ton of great shows under their belt. Truro has a great stage show and a great EP. I got Danny to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
I am Danny and I play bass & sing for Truro, (Other members are Ian - Guitar & Vocals...John, Drums & Vocals)
How did the band start?
The band started back in January 2010 and things was slow. The lineup briefly changed shortly after starting the band, which is when we acquired John on the drums. We all know each other from School, and have known each other for many many years, and have all played in each others bands throughout the past 10 years or so! Its nice to be back in a lineup were we are truly best friends in & out of the band.
How did you come up with the name?
We came up with the name from visiting a place in Cornwall in Southern UK called...Truro, we loved the place, it had a great vibe there and I suppose it's like a little home away from home for us..so we decided it would be a nice little name for the band!
Who would you say are your influences are?
Influences for us is a tough one...there's so many different genre's put on the table for Truro! We have influences of The Flatliners, A Wilhelm Scream and all the usual skatepunk suspects, but we also like to add our love for a fat breakdown into the mix, influenced heavily by bands such as Deftones, Parkway Drive Etc!
What is the punk scene like in the UK?
The punk scene in the UK has it's moments of greatness, and it's moments of complete disappointment! There are a LOT of great promoters out there who put on greats bands which gives a brilliant opportuinity for the local bands to support and get there name out. But unfortunately there are also a lot of bad promoters (some may call them 'Cowboy Promoters') I wont name any names, but for sure Truro have been stranded hundreds of miles away from home in a situation were the promoter has gone home without telling the bands..paying or feeding any bands when that was part of the deal for the show..but overall, we love the UK punk scene, it's what we grew up doing and live for the great moments.
Describe the song writing process…
The writing process for Truro basically all comes from these big jams that we do! We will all just get in a room, play something that we might have come up with during the week that we love the sound of, john plays what feels right, and we just jam it out until maybe a week later we have a nice finished tune that's ready for the stage!! Lately writing has been slow because we have been gigging a real lot, that's soon to be changed though!
What have you released?
We have released a 4 track EP which is called "Proud To Disagree' which is available from our bigcartel, which is www.bigcartel.com/truropunks I guess the meaning behind the EP for me personally is an attack on the general bad local music scene that seems to have existed at points over the years, people playing the same songs, wearing the same clothes, being in bands for the total wrong reasons etc, we are proud to put out music that locally, is pretty rare, and music that we don't mind if people hate...because this is the music WE love.
Where have you toured?
We have done weekend tours in the UK, and then earlier this year we did 6 days over in Europe, we played a few shows in Belgium! We had such a great time there and really reminds you that when you do put your mind, heart & soul into something, you CAN do it! I never thought it was possible to leave the country playing in our band...once you think outside the box, and genuinely believe it's an accessible target for anyone (which is it), you can do it! Danny just went away for a month around Western Europe driving 2 Swedish bands (Rebuke & From The Tracks, check them out!) and Truro are now booking a shorter version of that tour for October this year, so be sure to check our Facebook page to see if we're in your town!
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Some of the Bands Truro have played shows with are Far From Finished (US), Smartbomb (US), After The Fall (US), Chief (UK), Authority Zero (US), Jet Market (ITALY), Counterpunch (US) Chunk! No Captain Chunk! (FRANCE) The Arteries (UK) Rebuke (SWE) State Of Mine (BEL) and many many more! Were also due to play with The Flatliners in September, were excited for that show as they are probably our favorite bands!
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
There are 2 bands that we love playing with the most, without a shadow of a doubt, it's Fair Do's (Stupidly good, fast, shredding, unreal skatepunk band from Manchester, UK) And Chief (HouseHold Name Records legends, with there politically charged music, from Liverpool, UK) Both of these bands are some of our best friends, we party with them both at gigs and away from gigs, and are both extremely talented bands! Totally inspirational.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Favorite place for show's that Truro have experience has gotta be Belgium! Great people, great bands and generally feels very welcoming! But I know after the October tour around Europe there will be some serious contest from rival countries! Haha The whole of Mainland Europe is just, unreal.
What do you see is the future of Truro?
The future for Truro we hope to be very long! We're young, definitely not getting bored of it, and we've got no real commitments holding us back! So touring is always on the agenda for us! We are working on a full length album, set to be released this summer, so obviously the immediate future for us is going to be getting in the studio to record. Were also looking into next summer having a week over in the states. We have friends from a band called Smartbomb who live in Massachusetts, so that's definitely on the drawing board after the tour this year!
How can people contact the band?
People can get in touch with Truro for booking by either Inbox to Daniel Fairhurst on Facebook. An email to truromusic@hotmail.co.uk OR write on the wall for Truro on Facebook!
