Anti-Social is one of the California's oldest and greatest punk bands. They are not a recording band, but a live band that puts on one hell of a show. The band started in '86 and had a ten year split in '94. In 2004 Anti-social returned with a vengence! If you have not seen Anti-Social, you have not seen a real punk-rawk show. I got Charlie to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
My name is Charlie Cordova I play bass and sing for Anti-Social.
How did the band start?
The band started in 1986 in a garage in Montebello Ca. with brothers Charlie (Bass & Lead Vocals) and Manny Cordova (Guitar & Vocals) and Gabriel Marquez (Drums).
How did you come up with the name?
We came up with the name Anti-Social because of who we were as kids. We kept to ourselves, especially because if you looked punk you were looked down on. We were against society’s expectations as youths growing up.
Who would you say are your influences?
Our influences are The Original Bad Religion (1978), Black Flag, The Descendents, Social Unrest, The Partisans, as well as the E.L.A punk scene that we were a big part of.
What was the punk scene like back in 1986, when the band formed?
The punk scene was the real deal back when we started. Kids from everywhere would support the scene, no matter if you were punk, skinhead or long hair we were always there for one thing, for the bands!
How do you feel it has changed?
The punk scene to us has diminished. No one comes out and supports the bands unless you’re someone like Bad Religion, Social Distortion Ect. The music scene has taken a turn for the worse!
Back then you released a few demos, tell us about them…
The demo we released back when we started consisted of 6-8 songs on a cassette that we sold at a store called Wild Rags and Roadhouse Records in Montebello. We had also sold/gave away copies at our live shows.
What was the song writing process back then?
The writing processes that we took as a band were our views as kids in our society, as well as our life experiences. We also wrote songs about the false prophets in the world as well as all the crooked politicians that were put on a pedestal by our government.
How has the song writing process changed?
Most of us all have kids and families so our writing process has changed a bit, however we still write about out Government views, our views on religion as well as things that happen in our personal lives.
What caused the band to split back in 1994?
We were kids and pressured by everyday life. We had expectations of each other in the band and some of us could not agree with one other 100%, so we spilt up which was unfortunate. We now look back and laugh!
The band got back together again in 2004, what caused the band to reform?
A friend with a small label contacted us and they asked us to record some new music. We recorded a 6 - song EP with some old and new material that we released ourselves.
Who have you done shows with?
We have played with bands such as Bad Religion, Pennywise, The Offspring, The Adicts, Social Unrest, Shattered Faith, D.I., The Adolescents, The Lurkers (UK), DOA, Mad Parade, and J.FA to name a few.
There is word about a new full-length release, can you tell us more about that?
We are currently working on some new material. It is taking longer then anticipated as we are all busy with our kids & families. It will contain new and old material that has never been released as well as the demos released in the 80’s.
You guys have been thru a few line-up changes; tell us about the current lineup…
Anti-Social has always had bad luck with drummers. The current line up consists of one original member Charlie (Bass & Lead Vocals), Marty Morales (Guitar & Vocals) and Adrian Ramirez on (Drums). Manny Cordova will play some shows when we tour in LA as we are now based in San Jose Ca.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
We would like to play more shows with Bad Religion and a show with Social Distortion and The Descendents. We enjoy playing shows with every band that supports the punk scene!!!
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
We like to play a bar in San Jose called The Caravan always a great crowd and great bartenders that take care of the band. We also like shows that are all age’s because the kids are the ones that will keep the punk movement alive.
What do you see is the future of Anti-Social?
Anti-Social is here to stay!! We have a great line-up and we are making kick ass songs. The shows have been great and the crowds have been welcoming. Anti-Social has a lot to say as we will forge ahead and continue to support the punk scene.
