The Bloody Muffs are a great band from New York. They have done a ton of shows and a few small tours. They are actually a great band and have a couple of releases. They also have a stage show. I got the band to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
How are you? My name is Jonesy aka Lesac Dedouche. I sing and play guitar in the band w/two fabulous ladies- Jessica Carmen on bass and vocals and Kat Kaos on drums and vocals.
How did the band start?
The band started out in late 2007 when I played a few acoustic gigs under the name. In summer of 2008 an early acoustic version of Fireworks & Beer was released on a compilation CD. The band came together in 2009 when Kat and Jessica joined.
How did you come up with the name?
The name came from a caption on a picture of me w/fake blood on my face that said "Jonesy after eating a bloody muff". A friend saw the caption and was horrified by the image. With that kind of reaction I knew it was the perfect name.
Who would you say are your influences?
My influences are The Heartbreakers, X, Buzzcocks, Ramones and Pixies. Jessica and Kat bring in their influences too. That's where our sound comes from- all of our influences coming together.
What is the punk scene like in New York?
In NYC there are a bunch of amazing punk bands and people who support underground punk. We just keep meeting more and more awesome people who are doing the right thing for the bands like DJ Pat Pervert, Cutie Calamity, Phil Cadaver, Mike SOS and Mike from NYC punk.
Describe the song writing process...
Most songs start out when Jessica or myself bring in a loose structure. Jessica and I work out the arrangement and fine tune it and then we introduce it to Kat and she works out her part. After the main vocals are worked out Jessica works out the backing vocals and harmonies w/Kat. Then we get it into the set and continue fine tuning it.
Your first CD was 'Heavy Flow', tell us about the CD...
Heavy Flow was our first CD. Jessica joined the band a couple of weeks before we recorded it and Kat was 7 months pregnant. We took our time w/it since we couldn't play live until after Kat had the baby. With the sessions spread out me & Jessica got a chance to work stuff out and define our sound. We released it on Dec 4 2009. Some popular songs from this are Flop House, Love Me Like A Drug,
Fireworks & Beer and I Like Pussy.
In 2010 you released 'Sloppy Seconds', tell us about the CD...
We started working on Sloppy Seconds while we were finishing Heavy Flow. Sloppy Seconds was written by all 3 of us where as much of Heavy Flow was written before either of them joined the band. We recorded Sloppy Seconds in the Spring of 2010. The song writing is better as are our performances. We were more confident on this CD. We released it 6 months to the day of Heavy Flow on June 4 2010. Some popular songs from this are Let's Get Drunk & Fuck, Cause & Effect, Drunk Tank and The Ballad Of Tilty Rodriguez.
What else have you released?
We released a video for I Like Pussy from Heavy Flow. It was recorded at our shows this past April and only our friends and fans are in it. It was so much fun! http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D1PpVO4aeYqQ
We are writing our next CD now and expect to record it in 2012.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Around NYC we've played w/Tied For Last, Out Of Order, The Dead Tricks, Blackout Shoppers, The Blame, Yo!Scunt and World War IX and many more.
Have you toured?
We did a 3 week 18 city tour in the fall of 2010 and a 2 week 12 city tour in the spring of 2011. We did two mini tours in the winter and have a 4 date mini tour coming up from Aug 18 to Aug 22 in the midwest.
Do you prefer small clubs or large venues?
Despite the better sound and pro lighting at the bigger venues we much prefer playing small venues. Having the crowd right in our faces is awesome. The intimacy makes the show more special to the audience and us as it is easier to connect to people. We feed off the audience.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
There are 3 bands we LOVE playing with and they are Tied For Last, Out Of Order and The Dead Tricks. We all complement each other and are fans of one another.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Otto's Shrunken Head in NYC is our all time favorite place to play. It's our home base. Outside of NYC we love playing Spitfire Saloon in Cleveland, Swing State in Lake Villa Illinois, The Funhouse in Schererville IN, Melody Inn in Indianapolis, The Hole in Omaha, Sideshow in Columbia MO, Lemmons in St Louis and Soundpony in Tulsa.
What do you see is the future of the Bloody Muffs?
We are writing our 3rd CD now and finishing up the final leg of our tour next month. We plan to put out the CD next spring and go back on the road asap!
