Horror-punk is here to stay... Chesty Malone and the slice 'em Ups area mix of the Misfits, 50s biker slut movies and 50s horror b-movies. They are a great band, if you like the Undead and Choking Susan, this is the band to see live. They currently have a great a album out and there is more on the way. I got Anthony and Jaqueline to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
My name is Anthony Allen Van Hoek. I live in Brooklyn, New York with Jaqueline Blownaparte and three cats. I beat up the guitar for Chesty Malone and the Slice ‘em Ups and she sings. How do you do?
How did the band start?
Jackie and I were tired of there not being a band like us out there so we found Uruk BrĂ¼tal to play bass and Mike “Bleeding” Wiesenhart to play drums and formed the Slice ‘em Ups. (along the way we’ve also had Tom Murphy on drums and Hans Von Severed on Bass)
How did you come up with the name?
While drinking beer and eating T-bone steaks one night, Jackie and I at first jokingly came up with the name and it stuck.
Who would you say are your influences?
Rod Serling, Charles Bukowski, early 80s Hardcore, George Romero, Venom, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Good stuff like that.
What is the punk scene like in New York?
It is pretty much currently totally underground but thriving and growing. We don’t get much coverage in the mainstream media but who cares about that anyway? New York Waste mag is pretty much the only local rag that covers us around here. Shows are put on by bands and “advertised” through flyers and word of mouth, like the days of yore. Everyone probably already knows what the punk scene WAS here in NYC before so I’ll leave that for the history books.
Describe the song writing process...
Jackie and/or I will come up with a title or concept about something that pisses us off or we think is fucked up or funny and then I’ll write a riff and Whumpow!!! New Slice ‘em Ups material. Songs tend to be about how humanity in general sucks or how we wish we were cavemen. Stuff like that.
You guys released your first album 'Now We’re Gonna See What Disaster Really Means', tell us about the album...
Our first album came out on Wrecked Records three years ago this summer. We recorded it mostly live in the studio and added some guitar and vocal overdubs later. We made what you could pretty much call an old school Hardcore record. It’s 13 tunes and it lasts a whopping 27 minutes. You can grab a copy off our website: www.chestymalone.com or you can download it from all the usual suspects.
What else have you released?
Last Halloween United Riot Records put out a split 7” with us and Reason to Fight from RI on pink splatter vinyl. We’ve got three tunes on there. In September we will be releasing our second album, entitled Torture Rock and we are so excited!!! 13 more songs to help corrupt the youth and elderly of the world.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We’ve played with the Mentors, Johnny Vomit, Cancerslug, the Blame, Yo Scunt, Step 2 Far, Darkside NYC, Downlow, Seizure Crypt, Fed Up, Iconicide, Carnage Krew and the Sheckies! To name just a few.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
I’m not sure we’ve played a large venue yet hahaha! We usually play your basic shit holes.
Have you toured?
We’ve gone as far west as Chicago and up and down the Northeast. We wanna do more so let us know if you wanna see us in your town!
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
All the bands I listed above for sure. If Black Flag or the REAL Misfits ever re-form we hope to open those shows too.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Hmm, we had a great time playing Cha Cha’s in Coney Island a few weeks ago. Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn is also pretty cool. We got to play CBGB a couple months before they closed so that was nice.
What do you see is the future of Chesty Malone and the Slice 'em Ups?
Huh? Future? Well, after we get on the cover of Rolling Stone mag and we do our week long headline stint at Madison Square Garden I guess the sky’s the limit!
How can people contact the band?
You can check out our website: www.chestymalone.com or you can find us on Facebook or you can email: chestymalone@gmail.com
Thanks!
Torture Rock is coming kids, brace yourselves!
