Detached are a great ska band from Wales. Probably one of the best of the current generation of English ska. They actually have a great show they put on and have played a lot of great shows with a ton of great bands. They had several tours throught Europe and have a great EP out. I got Owain to tell their story...
Introduce Yourself...
Hi, I'm Owain. I play guitar in Detached. We're a Punk/Ska band from South Wales, UK.
How did the band start?
We started playing 4/5 years ago when me and Rhys we're little nippers had a shitty band and used to play Black Sabbath covers in his garage and went from there.
How did you come up with the name?
I think we got a bunch of names together and voted for which one to use and 'Detached' came out top and stuck with it since.
Who would you say are your influences?
I think it would be fair to say one of our biggest influences is Less Than Jake as a band, think lots of people can hear it too.
Bands like Big D and the Kids Table and The Flatliners are big influences too.
We listen to lots of different music as a band, its pretty hard to narrow it down.
What is the punk scene like in the UK?
Its pretty tight knit. After you tour around abit you notice everyone kinda knows everyone and helps each other out.
There's alot of people who put in alot of effort and hard work into keeping people coming to shows and keeping people involved.
Describe the song writing process...
Usually Rhys will come up with a basic idea of a song or a guitar part and things fall in place from there.
It changes but it all starts with one idea/riff/melody from someone.
Your first release was the 'None the Wiser' EP, tell us about the EP...
Its our first 'proper' release. We did an E.P in 2007 and then did a few tracks and burned them on CD-R's and gave it away for free at shows.
Then we released 'None The Wiser' in March 2010. It was a big stepping stone for us, was our first properlly packaged CD and made us feel like a 'real' band.
What else have you released?
See previous answer*
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We've played with lots of different bands over the years. From all different places and all different genres.
I think closing down your doors and only playing with 'this' or 'that' type of band is a really boring way to do things.
We've played with big names like Bowling for Soup and Wheatus to Punk Ledgends like H2O and UK Subs.
Have you toured?
Yup. We're currently on our 6 tour, I think. We did Mainland Europe for the first time in April and it was great.
Looking forward to getting back.
Do you prefer small clubs or large venues?
Depends I guess. Tiny, sweaty, in your face gigs are really fun.
We've played a few big stages and things, which have their advantages like lots of room to jump about and generally good sound.
Think I prefer small clubs though. Feels more real. Does that sound cliche?
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Would love to tour with We Are The Union from Detroit. They are really good and are a big inspiration.
Really want to play with The Flatliners and Big D and the Kids Table too.
There's lots of bands we would love to tour with. We're not fussy.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Cheltenham has always been good to us.
Norwich is really cool too, real nice people and community there.
Hometown shows in Newport/Cardiff are always fun, get to see all our friends too.
What do you see is the future of Detached?
We're touring Mainland Europe again in December, playing some shows with one of our favorite bands so looking forward to that.
We'll be doing some shows inbetween now and then and trying to write as much as can to get our album ready.
An album is the next big challenge for us. Another step up.
