The Hung Ups ***New Interview***

From the great state of Utah, I give you the Hung Ups. It's funny how everyone thinks they see a movie and it is real life. Not so true if you live in Utah. But, enough said. The Hung Ups are and always will be a fresh start for power-pop. They stay true to sound, but only the Screeching Weasel sense. Sometimes it's good to be a little different. This guys have a powering live show and they know how to have fun. With several releases and a bunch of live shows under them, you gotten see 'em. I got Josh to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…
Josh, I sing, and play bass in The Hung Ups, sometimes The Hang Ups if the venue fucks it up.

How did the band start?
In 2009, I was living in Rock Springs, Wyoming taking a vacation from life. Then I got bored and started writing shit loads of songs, some good, some bad.. Later I decided I should record these!! so I did. That is the album Red Rocket. I wanted a full band tho, so I moved back to Utah and formed the band I have now.

How did you come up with the name?
From The Riptides song 'Hung Up'  Ha Ha, Love that fuckin song!!!!! Also cuz Creed and Matchbox 20 were already taken.

Who would you say are your influences?
Screeching Weasel defiantly and foremost. All I remember about high school is getting drunk and listening to SW all the time, Mainly Anthem for a New Tomorrow, and Kill the Musicians....but pretty much anything early Lookout! Records.

What is the punk scene like in Utah?
It's no SLC Punk! ha ha, I'm referring to the movie. The punk scene is good but not as united as I personally would like it to be. Lot of labels, and politics. But I can't completely shit on it, we've had some great shows, and we are grateful for anyone and everyone who comes out to our shows and has a good time.

Describe the song writing process...
Me(Josh), Chuck, and Tyler write songs in our spare time outside the band, then bring them to practice and everybody contributes to how the song should be arranged. So a lot of our songs are collectively written.I've brought in songs to practice that later sounded completely different after I jammed them out with the dudes. It's fun as hell, and I wouldn't prefer it any other way. The lyrics are written by whoever sings the song.

In 2010, you released a self-titled album, tell us about the album...
That is what we consider our first 'Real' album. Since Red Rocket was done only by me, and the drums were pre-recorded, it kinda felt like a demo and the self titled album was our first real full length. We used three songs from Red Rocket on the Self Titled. We also included some old songs that me and Chuck jammed in our prior band 'Jack and the Off Beats.' It also has a song that Chris our drummer and Chuck played in one their earlier bands 'Los Reaction'  I love that fuckin' album and I'm very proud to call it our first album.

You also released 'Dawn of the Dead Beats', tell us about the album...
This album, in my opinion is a huge step up from the Self Titled album. It contains a few more Chuck songs, and one Tyler song, so it's cool to have three different singers on the album. It's still in the vein of Screeching Weasel and doesn't veer off musically from our prior albums. It stays true to the bubble gum pop punk but gives it a giant kick in the ass!! It's also released on local SLC label Ballz Out Records.
