The Insurgence ***New Interview***

Straight out of Seattle, the Insurgence are one of the best bands in Seattle to see live. They always do a great show and they enjoy what they do. The band has a few great records and has been up and down the West Coast of the US. Again always great to see live. I got Josh to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…
Josh Sinder drummer for the Insurgence

How did the band start?
it started in 2006 when we began writing the material for what would become the ep never surrender.

How did you come up with the name?
It was actually a friend of ours Rob Mcfarland who came up with the name, he just threw it out there and with most of our lyrical content being about a bunch of world issues it stuck.

Who would you say are your influences?
Mostly people and the crazy things they do and the world around us but as far as bands....black flag, circle jerks, slayer, bee gees, bad brains, broken bones, kill em all, ride the lightning, GBH, the accused, minor threat, amebix, besmirchers, discharge, wehrmacht, rancid, cryptic slaughter, mercyful fate, g.i.s.m., venom, motorhead, melt banana, poison idea, bad religion, sick of it all, septic death, DRI, plasmatics, dwarves, bolt thrower, voivod, tank, negative fx, jerrys kids, FU's, cro-mags, the clash, TAD, capaces, warzone, discharge, iron maiden killers, devo, agnostic front, trash talk, propagandhi, the freeze, nofx, ace frehley, thin lizzy, judas priest, killing joke, anti-cimex, zeke, sonic youth, einsturzende neubauten, skinny puppy, reagan youth, misfits, .................

What is the punk scene like in Seattle?
Very good, we have places to play all ages shows like the morgue, el corazon, the charleston and lots of rad bands like bloodclots, all bets on death, zeke, the accused, dreadful children, witchburn, streetwalker, hollowpoints, koozebane, dragstrip riot, vile display of humanity, book of black earth, badlands, spittin cobras, black breath, brothers of the sonic cloth, skarp..........

Describe the song writing process…
usually mike or I will come in with 2 or 3 guitar riffs or johnny and justin and we will just start arranging all the parts until they sound good to us. many times jibo will write a great chanting chorus lyric and we will write music around that...really whatever it takes to get something that just sounds like the mood of song we might be going for

Your first release was the ‘Never Surrender’ EP, tell us about the EP…
we went into soundhouse studio in ballard wa. with jack endino to record like 18 songs and ended up finishing 14. we wanted to release something just to get the band off the ground and we had been talking to chuck from basement records who ended up putting out 4 of the songs from that session as an ep.

The EP was produced by Jack Endino, what was it like working with him?
jack is very fast at getting a great drum sound and guitar. he is a very nice guy and easy to deal with, he is very specific and knows how to help a band get the sound they are looking for.

In 2010, you released a self-titled 14 song album, tell us about the album…
we had to go back in the studio again with endino and record 4 more songs since we stole 4 of them for the ep. those songs are "wings of death", "destroyed republic", "faces wrapped in black" and "SFU". they have a little difference in sound maybe you can notice, maybe not. we started a record label called digital warfare records with donny from zeke and released that in may 2010. theres a video for the song "images of the apocalypse" from that record that we shot on this huge old abandoned bridge in tacoma wa. called the 11th st bridge.

Tell us about the current lineup…
we have jibo/vox, mike timebomb/guitar, josh/drums/vox, justin/bass/vox, johnny/guitar/vox and this is the line-up you see in our new video for the song "images of the apocalypse". we also just recorded 6 new songs with this line up and its sounding heavier than ever with the addition of johnny reed on guitar/vox

Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Circle Jerks, bad brains, DOA, DRI, the accused, lower class brats, dropkick murphys, restarts, casualties, misfits, MDC, rancid, verbal abuse, vice squad, youth brigade, GBH,
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
playing large venues with bands like rancid or dropkick murphys is very exciting for newer bands like us but ultimately the smaller venues provide the better crowd participation like circle pitting. jibo likes to jump in the crowd all the time and he does at those big shows but its harder to get everyone going in a circle.

Have you toured?
Weve toured up and down the west coast alot including tours with Dropkick Murphys and Lower Class Brats. We have only been as far east as arizona and texas. We have a release in europe so touring there is a something we are working on now and also an east coast tour we are going for. We do have a tour coming up on the west coast in october of 2011 booked around a show on oct 15 at the hollywood palladium with dropkick murphys and swingin utters.

Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
I think our favorite shows have been with bad brains, rancid, zeke, dropkick murphys, poison idea, lower class brats, dwarves, casualties and the old days with CLR and Degenerated. looking forward to a show with DRI in seattle on sept 24 2011.

Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
In seattle, showbox at the market or el corazon, and CA, key club palladium, riff haus, cobalt cafe, fox theater

What do you see is the future of the Insurgence?
we will continue writing the kind of music we like to play and keep putting ourselves out there as much as possible. East coast tour and european tour are a couple of short term goals.
