Irish punk bands come and go, but JPKALLIO.COM is here to stay and make a lasting impression. As a band they have one EP and coming some a few album. They have a lot of live stage time and they know how to get the crowds to the never level. Great stuff live and recorded. I got the band to tell their story...
Introduce yourself...
Hi, Were a Dublin based punk rock band called JPKALLIO.COM
We have Sebastian on Drums, Qra on Bass and backing vocals and my self, J.P. on Guitar and Vox
We're bit of a scattered bunch, Qra and Sebastian are from Poland, and I'm from Finland, but Dublin is our home at the moment.
How did the band start?
I've been playing in an Irish folk trad band called Sliotar for years. When Sliotar finished their summer tour in 2010, I thought it was time to record some of my own songs. The first phone call was to Qra, for few years we had talked about playing some music together. The time felt right, and the search for a drummer was on. Qra had briefly met Sebastian in a party some time ago, so we decided to give him a call and see if we got on. In Beginning of October 2010 the three of us got together in a rehearsal room in the north inner city of Dublin and in a midway through the rehearsals it was obvious to all of us that the chemistry worked and a band was born.
How did you come up with the name?
In the beginning of the project I had an idea of recording a solo album, but after the first rehearsal it was obvious it was not a solo project, it was a band. I had already registered a website, and after few beers in the local pub, we decided to call the band JPKALLIO.COM
Who would you say are your influences?
We all have very diverse musical backgrounds, but we all like Social Distortion, Bad religion, The Living end, The Ramones, The Clash...
What is the punk scene like in Ireland?
The punk scene in Ireland seems to be brewing again. There are lot more concerts around and young and not so young punk bands coming out from every where. It really feels like even the punk scene has always been there, it's about to have a revival. Watch this space;-)
Describe the song writing process...
I'm the main songwriter, I pick the guitar and the songs just seem to fall out. Then the songs are shaped in the rehearsals with Qra and Sebastian giving them the JPKALLIO.COM sound.
You first released an EP, tell us about the EP...
We recorded the E.P. with our own recording equipment in my flat and in the rehearsal room. It was done six moths after we started to play together. We are giving the E.P. away for free download on our website http://www.jpkallio.com all you need to do is sign up to our mailing list:-)
You also released your first album, tell us about the album...
Not yet;-) We have just finished writing all the material for our first Album and really can't wait to record it. Still working on the details of how to go about it. But after summer we'll get going with it.
What have you released?
So far Just the E.P. "Play it loud!"
Also we have few official videos on our youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/jpkallio
and quite few live videos.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
There are loads, but the ones that we really liked were 24 broken amps, 9thlife, Time Is A Thief, Normal, bar the swords, The Wicked few.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
You know, both have their advantages. Its great feeling to be in front of big crowd and rock it out with big sound system, but sometimes the small sweaty club gigs are the best.
Have you toured?
Not yet, but deffo will when the album comes out.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Wow! So many... we'd love to play support for Social Distortion, Nomeansno, Loaded, Bad religion, Motorhead,... But there is a reasonably new band from L.A. called Thousand Watt Stare, would love to see them play in Dublin and open up for them.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
We are hungry for live gigs and would love to play anywhere that would have us;-)
Do you see is the future of JPKallio?
The short term thing is to record our first Album and get on the road with it. The long term plan is to get the band to the point of having some sort of sustainability, and get to do this full time. Getting signed to Epitaph probably would be a wild dream come through.
