One of the UK's best kept secrets Sad Society is one of the UK's oldest punk bands. Starting in the early '80's these guys are no strangers to the UK underdog scene. They have a great stage show and have appearred in ton of compilations. They have released two 7" records and a full length CD. They have also shows will some of the greatest punk bands in the UK. I got Deek to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
Deek - founding member of Sad Society. The current line up is: Shade - Guitar; Bally - Guitar; Scrambled - Bass ; Baz - Drums & Me on vocals.
How did the band start?
In the early 80's, Clermiston (in Edinburgh - where I lived) alot of local bands jammed & recorded, others did the odd gig with members of each band joining each other. Although I was involved, I wanted a band of my own - set apart from hybrids. I auditioned till I got a suitable line-up around 1982.
How did you come up with the name?
I was lucky! After finding the right line up, a headline in the local news read "we are living in a sad society". Although we had several possible names selected - Sad Society - summed up our feelings at that time. The name stuck.
Who would you say are your influences?
My influences pre-punk were Bowie, The Sweet & Darts to name a few. When punk came along, I got into The Wasps, Art Attacks & Eater amongst others. I always appreciated the smaller bands & independant labels. I'd say Generation X are my all time favourites. Other band members influences include Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Kiss & New York Dolls.
What is the punk scene like in the UK?
Obviously, the punk scene is more underground than it was when it exploded in the UK in '77....but there's plenty bands & gigs throughout the UK. Punk Rock is certainly here to stay!!
Describe the song writing process...
I write 99% of our songs. I usually get an idea/subject matter, then write the music & work the lyrics around the tune. Usually, the inspiration is topical stuff to vent about, or personal experiences & influences.
What have you released?
Contaminate/Ambition 7" single (x-cert 011) released 1987. Nothing To Do/Nothing Ever Changes 7" single ( HOO 12) released 1994.
The Best Thing Since Hand Relief - CD Album (x-cert 012) released 1995.
Several other tracks appear on various punk compilations - vinyl & CD. We now record & sell our own CDs at gigs without going through labels.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We've played with - X Ray Spex; 999; UK Subs; Vibrators; Chelsea; Lurkers; Splodgenessabounds; Anti Nowhere League; Spear Of Destiny; Vice Squad; The Exploited & The Meteors.
Have you toured?
Yes - only in the UK.
Do you prefer small clubs or large venues?
I do prefer smaller venues, but it doesn't matter - as long as there's a good crowd & everyone enjoys themselves!
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Would be a pleasure to play with Generation X - but they're long since disbanded. We love gigging, we're happy to play with any band - genre not an issue.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Any venue, anywhere - just love playing live!!
What do you see is the future of Sad Society?
More recording, definately more gigs & looking forward to playing Solfest in August with The Stranglers, The Damned & UK Subs.
