This is the band for great NYC hardcore punk. They have released an album and have played a ton shows with a lot of great bands. I got Christopher to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
My name is Christopher. I am thee wailing-siren/vox for Yo!SCUNT. The other members are....paulie on guitar. seamus on drums. andrew on bass.
How did the band start?
The band started towards the end of 2004. The original drummer and co-founding member Tim "Timma" Xie and I were at a show in Woodside,Queens. It was a tuesday night i think...well after we watched and listened to NO PLACE TO PISS, we thought why don't we start a band. So we did. We played with one guitar player who said he was serious. He couldn't meet up again until 3 weeks later or some malarky like that. We didn't care for his playing either. The dude wasn't a dick or anything.
How did you come up with the name?
Yo!SCUNT.... Yo!.....we're new yorkers. we dont say oi!...we say yo!. The scunt part, when I used to hump bags at the airport the jamaicans other west indie dudes used to call me a 'scunt' cus I'm down with goin down on girls. Nothing exciting.
Who would you say are your influences?
We have a lot of influences. Many similar and many different. punk, hardcore, oi!, reggae, all kinds of music.
What is the punk scene like in New York?
I think its a fun scene. I hear that outside of ny there are plenty of good thriving scenes.
Describe the song writing process...
It used to be I'd bring lyrics and then music would be written to the words. lately its the opposite.
Your first release was the 'Damaged Good and Gravy Sweat' CD, tell us about the CD...
What else have you released?
No, its our second release. We have 11-song e.p. called "Yo yo yo". Also there were 2 or 3 demos before that.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We've played w/ a lot of bands. URBAN WASTE, MOUTH SEWN SHUT, MURPHY'S LAW, DOWN LOW NYHC, CAUGHT IN A TRAP, THE BLAME, SEIZURE CRYPT, BLOOD BEAT, A-TRUTH, SECOND BEST, THE STRAPHANGERS, THE BLOODY MUFFS, RETRO-VIRAL, THE FRIGHTENERS, WW9, BLACKOUT SHOPPERS, SKUM CITY, DIS-CON....A LOT OF BANDS.
Have you toured?
No. We're all-city and have played in ny state as well, pa, ct, nj, and mass.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
There's too many to name.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
We all have different choices i think. i like the hilltap tavern in queens.
What do you see is the future of Yo!Skunt?
I dont know about yo!skunt. Yo!SCUNT will continue to write and play.
