Viejos Culiados ***New Interview***

Blasting out of Argentina Viejos Culiados is an awesome punk band. They have a killer live show and have only played shows locally. As a band, the are pretty much the same as the previous bands they are made up of and have a very impressive list of bands that they have shared the stage with. They have so far only released a demo, but have been asked to appear on some great comps. I got Fede to tell their story...

Introduce yourself...
I’m Fede Kaos, Viejos Culiados drummer, and I’m going to introduce the band to you all.

How did the band start?
Some time ago, we changed the band name from Kaos Represivo to Hardlife. Then, we wanted to form another band, Ultrakaos, but with this band we could not continue playing Punk Core as with Hardlife, so Ultrakaos wasn’t formed at all. After that, the idea about Viejos Culeados flashed into our minds and we formed the band. Viejo Culeados plays some songs of Kaos Represivo plus some other new songs.

How did you come up with the name?
With the name Viejos Culiados, we want to make reference to all those “bloody men” that control people in society. Many songs are dedicated to those bloody men in many different societies such as, priests, pedophiles, policemen, military repressors, murderers, corrupt politicians, men that beat women, drivers that kill people and then run away, people who discriminate against because of race, national origin, etc. Although the name is kind of offensive to most ordinary people, and many musicians were reluctant to join us in the new band due to the name, we finally decided that this would be the right name for the band, so we called it “ Viejos Culiados”.

Who would you say are your influences?
We like punk and the hardcore of the 80’s and 90’s a lot, but we also like different bands, including GBH, Discharge, Varukers, Chaos Uk, Conflict, Total Chaos, Agnostic Front, Sick Of IT All, D.R.I., Los Crudos, Circle Jerks , Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Ratos de Porao, Olho Seco, Colera, and the like.

What was the punk scene like in Argentina?
I’ll make a short summary of the punk scene in Argentina because it has a long history. The scene in Argentina has existed since 1979, when Los Testículos that later changed its name to Los Violadores were the first band to foray into punk. In the 80’s, there were many other good bands such as Los Baraja, Rigidez Kadaverika, Defensa y Justicia, Cadaveres de Niños, Ataque 77, Mal Momento, Flema, Conmoción Cerebral, 2 Minutos, etc, but Los Violadores were the only ones that could gather around 5,000 people to witness their shows at that time. In the 90’s, other bands like Ataque 77 and 2 Minutos started to crowd stadiums with a capacity of about 5,000 people, and bands such as Ramones made shows in soccer stadiums, being their last show in a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 people. Other bands such as Mal Momento, Sin Ley and Flema grew more and although they crowded smaller places they were very important. In the 90’s, hardcore was also all the rage, specially bands such as, No Demuestra Interés, B.O.D., E.D.O., Diferentes Actitudes Juveniles., I.D.S., Funeral Funny, Venganza, Fun People, I.T.A., Total Caos, D.N.D., Cerebros Atómicos, and so on. The 90’s were very good times for punk music and hardcore in Argentina.
From the year 2000 to nowadays, the scene has grown a lot and now it has become very powerful. Currently, there are many bands that play punk rock with a style similar to that of Ramones and some years ago some bands started to play punk rock with a style similar to that of 2 Minutos . For this reason, sometimes listening the similar style of punk rock is kind of boring, but there are other bands that play their own style of punk and that is fantastic. We hope for punk scene growing even more. Nowadays, many international bands visit Argentina; luckily, the most traditional punk bands always come to Argentina. The scene in Argentina, for a long time, has been very connected with the scene of punk in Chile, Peru, Brazil and Uruguay. Many bands from these countries come to Argentina and Argentine bands go to play to those countries. There is also a good relation with the whole Latin America, but distance is what sometimes makes going on tours impossible. Nevertheless, punk music compilations of many Latin America bands are constantly being made.

Describe the song writing process...
Writing songs is straightforward; songs come to our minds almost in a natural way. Sometimes, one comes up with an idea and then all the members of the band add more details and we write them during the rehearsals. Our songs are about the problems that people suffer from and hate, mainly the young people, so on the basis of that we produce our songs. They are mainly based on criticism about a particular problem and opinion about a particular life situation.

What have you released?
We have recorded a live Demo called “Invasión Punk en Vivo” which was recorded in March, 2011. This Demo can be downloaded for free on the following websites: www.viejosculiados.com.ar and www.facebook.com/viejosculiados, or you can send us an e-mail: viejosculiados@hotmail.com
Our music will be included in some international compilations such as compilations made in Holland, Malaysia, Spain and Slovakia.
We are officially recording our first EPs this year which will be released at the end of the year 2011 or at the beginning of the year 2012.

Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Up to the moment, we have only done shows with bands of our city because the band is on a new stage. But in the past, with Kaos Represivo we did shows with amazing bands such as Manu Chao (former Mano Negra singer), the second formation of Dead Kennedys, Fun People, among others; and we have done shows with some other bands such as Napalm Death(uk), Vibrators (uk), Deicide (US), Tidal (Germany), xMaroonx (Germany), Belvedere (Canada), Dance Of Days (Brazil), Colera (Brazil), Fresno (Brazil), Abuso Sonoro (Brazil), Carahter (Brazil), Ataque Periférico (Brazil), Maguerbes (Brazil), Children Of Gaia (Brazil), etc.

Have you toured?
We have’nt gone on tour with Viejos Culiados, we´ll start our tour in September and we’ll be playing in different provinces in Argentina and maybe in Chile. We are planning to go on tour to South American countries as well as Costa Rica, Mexico, United States of America and Spain in 2012, but these will be short tours. We no longer tour for two or three months since we have a NGO called “ Esperanza Intacta “ ; we have a lot work to do there and many people that need our help (for contributions, our Website is: www.esperanzaintacta.org.ar.)
We were on tour throughout Argentina and Brazil with Kaos Represivo, and we were in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil with Hardlife and Vagazos.

Do you prefer small clubs or large venues?
We really don´t mind the place. In small clubs, shows are more intimate and the atmosphere makes people lose control easily, because we are all cramped and that is really cool. However, we also like playing in large venues because we´ve had a positive response from the public and we love communicating our music and the messages of our songs to large amounts of people at the same time.

Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
We dont have a favourite band; we like playing with all the bands, but we are more used to do shows with bands that play punk rock and hardcore and have ideas similar to ours. However , we have also done shows with bands that have different styles and we liked it a lot, too.

Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
We don’t have a favorite place; we liked doing shows at a friend’s house that was very underground and it was like the ideal place for us, but when we wanted to organize a music festival, the house was sold. In general, we like playing in places where their owners treat bands very well and do not demand so many requirements; otherwise, we prefer not playing...

What do you see is the future of Viejos Culiados?
The first thing we want to do is to record the EPs and tour throughout Argentina and other countries as I said before. We also want to compose more songs for future albums. We have so many ideas in our minds that we’ll not stop until we record 10 albums in a row.

How can people contact the band?
All the people that want to contact us can send us an e-mail: viejosculiados@hotmail.com, or visit our website: www.viejosculiados.com.ar and www.facebook.com/viejosculiados .
