Hate for State ***New Interview***

Hate for State is a long running punk band from Salinas, CA. Starting in 1999, they have built themselves into an institution. They have released 4 awesome albums and have current plans for a 5th release. Have a great live set and have shared the stage with tons of legendary punk bands. Have played shows all over California and for 3 or 4 years became the house band for a club. HFS have also played shows in Arizona and Texas. I got Randy to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…
Randy Dowdy - Vocals & Bass

How did the band start?
Hate For State was born in the summer of 1999 in a garage in Salinas, CA.

How did you come up with the name?
Our name first began as the initials "H.F.S." and soon evolved into "Hate For State" meaning "to have hate for the state of what is going on all around us" Gigs were scarce due to few "all ages" venues and we found ourselves playing anywhere and everywhere from living rooms to backyard parties. After breaking into the club scene around 2001, we began booking venues all over Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Francisco and Sacramento areas. HFS became the house band at "The Lava Lounge" in Monterey, CA where we played once a week for almost 3 or 4 years straight until they closed their doors a few years ago.

Who would you say are your influences?
With such influences as Bad Religion, NOFX, Pennywise, Descendents, Black Flag and Minor Threat just to name a few. Fresh out of high school we recorded our first demo before the end of that summer.

What is the punk scene like in Salinas?
The majority of the punk scene in Salinas is under 21 so all ages shows can get pretty packed where Monterey tends to draw the older crowd.

Describe the song writing process...
We approach the writing process from different angles and have collaberated on many of our songs during writing sessions where someone may have an idea, riff or a completed song to bring to the table, but for the most part we all do our share of writing.

What have you released?
With 4 previous albums: "Fuck Politics" 2000, "Padded Room" 2005, "Moving On" 2005, and "Just Begun" 2007 we are currently in the studio recording our 5th album set the release early 2012.

Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We have played with many local and national acts including: Dr. Know, Agent Orange, Psychosomatic and Riff Raff 500, but some of our favorite local bands would be: 3 Up Front, Pride Subject, F.U.X. and Psychosomatic.

Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
I can't say we prefer big or small venues cuz usually the big venues have the killer sound systems and the small venues have the better crowds. It all depends on location but personally I like The Whiskey A-Go-Go for the atmosphere and just knowing that legends such as Hendrix and Jim Morrison have shared that stage at some point, always gives me a surreal feeling.
With several hundred shows under our belt, we will book anywhere big or small, club or basement as long as there's a crowd we will rock it.

Have you toured?
In 2007 endorsed by Fringe Clothing co. and Sin-Cal Psychos We booked our first western tour including stops at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in Hollywood CA, Whiskey Dicks Saloon in Lake Tahoe CA, Kit Carson Skatepark in Escondido CA, Jugheads in Phoenix AZ, Room 710 in Austin TX and The Underground Club in Lake Havasu AZ. Our most recent tour through CA, AZ and TX this past Aug. was put together on sort notice by The Salinas Talent Agency.

What do you see is the future of Hate for State?
The future for Hate For State will consist of more song writing and touring further to spread our music. We plan to tour to the east coast in the summer of 2012 and plan to visit Canada and Europe in the near future.
