Coastal Gris ***New Interview***
Coastal Gris is an awesome punk band out of San Diego. They have released an awesome demo. They also have a great live set and have done shows with some great bands. I got Andres and Bill to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
Andres - Lead Vocals
Bill - Guitar
The other 3 puppets are:
Adam -Guitar
Pete - Drums
Mr. Gigglesworth - bass
How did the band start?
Andres: In a buddy's kitchen in mission beach. It was the only space we had that would fit our kit and amps. Not to mention, the boulevard traffic noise helped with the high volumes from everything being turned up!
How did you come up with the name?
Bill: Just thought it sounded cool and meaning is open to many interpretations
Who would you say are your influences?
Bill: You know...All the good old school stuff: Bad Religion, Pennywise, Minor Threat, etc..
What is the punk scene like in San Diego?
Bill: definitely more of an indie scene in this town...I suppose there are other punk bands around here, but it can be hard to put together a straight punk rock show...I guess a lot of bands around here refer to themselves as post-punk or punk-esque, whatever the hell that means...
Describe the song writing process...
Andres: methodical and painfully detailed oriented - when we want to be.
Bill: yeah...lots of love (i.e. disagreements, yelling, insults)... eventually unity and (hopefully) a good product
What have you released?
Bill: a 3-song demo (looking to release our first EP in March)
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Bill: PunchCard, Surrounded by Thieves
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
Andres: Anywhere that is receptive to lots of energy. Doesnt matter if we're playing in isle 8 of the grocery store, if people want the energy brought to them, we'll be bringing it.
Have you toured?
Bill: no...but we did go to Vegas once...don't remember much about it, but I'm pretty sure it was cool
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Andres: Punchcard, another local SD punk rock band. True punk bands in general. After that, it depends.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Bill: not really, like Andres said earlier...it's really about the crowd
What do you see is the future of Coastal Gris?
Andres: Future? Near future...Veterans day this Friday, which a Federal Holiday....At least 50% of CG will most likely be experiencing slight dementia due to extreme insubordination of certain things. Future not as near, commercializing. Meaning, we want our music to hit the San Diego local extreme sports culture thru videos, events, and more.
Bill: just trying to make every new song better than the last and getting our music out to as many people as possible. Even though the focus is always making great music, we want to work hard to master the business side as well and think outside the box on ways to expand our fan base...
How can people contact the band?
Andres: CALL US! We are the only band we know that has a member in the band whose dual function is it that of a guitarist and a CG hotline receptionist. His name is Adam Parry. Phone # (951)217-1837. He'll answer everything but may not be right. AND he may end up asking you more questions than you asked to him!
Bill: just email us at coastalgris@gmail.com or send a message through our website: http://reverbnation.com/coastalgris.
