Dogbreth ***New Interview***
Dogbreth is a great punk band out of Phoenix. They have an amazing live set and have done a lot of shows with some awesome punk bands. They currently have 3 great releases and more to come. They have also toured the US. I got Tristan to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
Hey this is Tristan, I'm the axe-man. I also play guitar and sing in Dogbreth.
How did the band start?
Well the band started after a pop punk band I was in called Vigils broke up.
It was as a 3-piece band with my friends Austin and Brandon, but they moved
to Flagstaff before we played any shows so it became a solo-acoustic project for a little while. Then I did a tour with some friends from Seattle and they learned a few of my songs and backed me up for the second-half of my set. After getting home I wanted to keep playing with a band so I got some friends together and it just worked out really well.
How did you come up with the name?
I think a dog was literally breathing on my face.
Who would you say are your influences?
Well the bands that originally made me want to start playing music were Nirvana, They Might Be Giants, Simon & Garfunkel and The Dead Milkmen.
But my influences are constantly changing, and I'm inspired most by anyone that makes their art honestly and passionately.
What is the punk scene like in Phoenix?
All over the map. There really is no "Phoenix Sound", at least not that I know of. Unfortunately there have always been a lot of cliques and micro-scenes that for one reason or another don't like each other. But maybe it's like that everywhere. I don't know. But if you can rise above all that you'll see that there's so many special and unique bands, solo artists and people here involved in diy music.
Describe the song writing process...
I always start with words. Sometimes I'll have a melody or rhythm in my head
when I'm writing them, but lyrics are always first. I try and keep them vague enough to be relatable, but honest enough for them to be important to me.
What have you released?
In 2010 I self-released a solo-acoustic EP entitled "Sickly Bright From Love".
Last Spring my friend Austin and I released a split-cassette called "Dugas Orme". And this past Summer our first full-band album "Chookie" was released by Skulltula Records and Wizards of The Ghost.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
Off the top of my head... Lemuria, Sidekicks, Bomb The Music Industry, Andrew Jackson Jihad, RVIVR, The Wild, Doctor Dinosaur, Rumspringer, Theo Hilton, Dragons, iji, Filardo, Mega Bog, Good Amount, Kusikia, Hello The Mind Control, Diners, Madeline Ava, Spoonboy...
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
Any place that's all-inclusive and has an atmosphere conducive to fun.
I'll take a basement, garage or living room over a bar any day.
Have you toured?
Yes. All over the country. Touring's the best!
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Lots! We love playing with all kinds of different bands. Any of the above mentioned bands!
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
The Trunk Space, right here in Phoenix. Hands down. Best venue.
What do you see is the future of Dogbreth?
A much buffer version of the band.
We're also coming out with two 7" records and a tape this Summer.
And going on a 2-month tour all over the country, and maybe Canada!
