Electric Fireworks ***New Interview***
Electric Fireworks are an awesome punk band from Baltimore. They have a great live set and have shared shared the stage with some great bands. They are mainly focusing on recording, but still do live shows. They also have a great EP out and are currently getting an album together. I got the band to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
Electric Fireworks is a Baltimore based Post-Punk Revival band. We currently have three members. Vick does lead vocals and plays drums for a few songs. Daniel plays guitar and sings back up vocals. He also fills in for drums when needed. Leigh Ah is our studio engineer who mixes and masters our songs at Shamrock Manor Studio. She also fills in for guitar when needed. So far we have been together for a little over a year.
How did the band start?
The three of us have played together in various bands in the past. Vick initially contacted all his previous band mates to put together a new band. This band was originally called Electronic Fireworks and had nine members. (Have you ever tried coordinating plans with nine people on a weekly basis? It’s a recipe for disaster.) We eventually brought the group down to the three of us and changed the name of the band to Electric Fireworks.
Who would you say are your influences?
Lots and lots of lsd. Probably TOO much actually. Seriously though, we derive a lot of influence from a lot of the Post-Punk Revivalist bands out there. A bit of the Strokes and Julian Casablancas' and their energy to Archie Bronson Outfit's rawness.
What is the punk scene like in Baltimore?
There is definitely a striving punk scene in Baltimore, but you sometimes need to look for it a little. The great people over at The Sidebar Tavern have definitely helped us meet some great up and coming bands in the Baltimore region.
Describe the song writing process...
The best way to answer this would be to say that we function like a navigation system. Vick figures out where we need to go and sets the destination. He initially writes the song coming up with the basic drum beats, the lyrics, and the melody for the song. Daniel gives the turn by turn instructions because he makes sense of Vick’s ideas and puts the whole song together. He writes the guitar parts and tweaks the drumming as he goes along. Leigh Ah is the destination point because she helps us make the final adjustments to the songs before recording.
You released "Your Own Personal Lite-Brite Adventure", tell us about the EP...
Over the course of the year we have written and gotten rid of several songs. The four that made the cut were Crave, Brownie Points, Excuses, and Rehab. The three of us have done tons of recordings with our prior bands and shared those with people. We love this EP because it’s the first thing that the three of us have released that we recorded professionally at a studio.
What else have you released?
With this band the four songs on the EP are the only songs we have released. We have a few more songs we are about to record and hopefully will be releasing our first full length CD “Between Now and Then” early next spring.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
So far we have been concentrating more on writing and recording before getting out to perform, but so far we have had good sets with: Braceface, The Caffiends, The Scutches, Connect Four, Triplet Gay Brothers, and The Firecrackers.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
We prefer smaller venues. It’s much more intimate and we feel that you can really connect and interact with the audience more.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Two great bands that we have really enjoyed playing with in the past are The Firecrackers from Baltimore and Braceface from Maryland. Firecrackers have a really cool 60s feel to their music. Braceface is a lot more punky, but are always down for a good set. Watching them play is always great because they have extremely energetic shows and catchy songs to sing along to. Plus their drummer is super dreamy.... :D
How can people contact the band?
We have a facebook page that we regularly check which is www.facebook.com/electricfireworks. Another way to reach us is through our email electricfireworks@gmail.com.
