Farler's Fury ***New Interview***
Farler's Fury is an awesome band out of QUebec, Canada. They have an awesome live set and they have played shows with an amazing list of bands. They released a handful of amazing releases. They have also been touring since 2006. I got the band to tell their story...
How did the band start?
The band started with a phone call, like any other band probably starts.
How did you come up with the name?
The name comes from a song written by the Eastern Townships Pipe Band, in which both our bagpiper and drummer played. It was fun at first, but over time it loses it's charm. The name fits well in the whole Celtic Punk/Pub Rock genre, which is where we started musically, but after 9 years it couldn't be further from reality, and something we fought hard - and continue to do so - to distance ourselves from.
Who would you say are your influences?
Our influences are pretty varied, and not what most people would expect for a band with bagpipes. On any one of our 10 hour drives through the Canadian North you will hear a range of folk, rock and punk music such as Bob Dylan, David Francey, Old Man Luedecke, William Elliott Whitmore, Frank Turner, Gaslight Anthem, The Menzingers, Against Me!, The Bouncing Souls, Cobra Skulls, The Rebel Spell, Brutal Youth, and Propagandhi.
What is the punk scene like in Quebec?
The scene in Quebec is thriving right now, and has been for a few years now. Like all scenes it goes through ups and downs and with the recent death of The Sainte Catherines I think we all thought there would be this gaping hole left unfilled for years. Instead we are seeing more and more solid bands not only forming but hitting the road as well. It seems as though more and more local bands are saying "fuck it!" and going out and losing money on the road, and not caring about it because they're doing exactly what they want to do, without waiting for the support that may never come. Once you realize that, at the root of it all, making money is the least important thing in music you see that the only thing that stops you from doing what you want is yourself. Tightrope, The Hunters, Brixton Robbers, Old School Politics, and Inside Riot are a few of the bands that have been actively touring recently without much support.
Describe the song writing process...
An absolute mess that only really gets finalized on the floor of the studio the night before we record vocals.
What have you released?
We've got a few releases...
In 2006 we independently released our first 8-song demo "Legends and Barfights".
In 2007 we independently released a full length called "Life In The Forks".
In 2009 we independently released a second demo called "In Between".
In 2010 we independently released our second full length called "Purgatory, Quebec", which has since been picked up by UncleOwen Records in Japan and My Fingers! My Brain! Records in Canada.
That's the reality of it, but for everyone in the band we consider our only release to be Purgatory, Quebec. Its on this album that we all feel we found our sound and is the first recording that we can all say we're proud of. The fact that we had a major lineup change prior to the recording of it and the fact that our songwriting has matured significantly since 2007 play big parts in that.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We've played a lot of shows with a lot of bands over the years. Some of the larger bands we've played with include Guttermouth, The Real McKenzies, The Vibrators, Green Jelly, and probably a bunch more I've forgotten about.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
We rarely get to play large venues, but when we do they tend to lack any kind of connection with the crowd. That's the great part about small venues and basement shows, everyone is on the same level and it feels equally as special to be in the band or in the crowd. Sweat, blood, raw sound and dirty beer... what could be better.
Where have you toured?
We've been actively touring since 2006 and have ramped up things since our lineup change in 2010. Aside from hundreds of shows across Quebec and Ontario, we've been to the USA 3 times with shows throughout the Mid-West and North East. We've gone on 6 Canadian tours, including 2 as direct support for The Vivrators in 2009 and 2010. Last September marked our first trip overseas with shows across France, Belgium, Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
We will be returning to Europe for just over 3 weeks this Spring with shows in France, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Netherlands, and a few more countries to be determined. Once we're back we're going to hit the road across Canada for the first tie since May 2011 and we couldn't be more excited from this one as we will be joined by our new friends from Regina, Royal Red Brigade.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
The Rebel Spell, The Pity Whores, and any really good old time string band.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
A few of our favourite venues are L'Esco in Montreal, L'Antidote in Bordeaux, Cafe Dekcuf in Ottawa, The Grateful Fed in Kelowna, and Trash Bar in Brooklyn.
What do you see is the future of Farler's Fury?
A bitter breakup caused by a complicated love triangle.
How can people contact the band?
We are all unemployed and have no friends, so we enjoy whatever social contact we can get. We are constantly on facebook stalking people on their profiles and starting photoshop wars with other Sherbrooke bands for no apparent reason so I guess that's the best place to find us! Eventually we plan on getting a website but then we wouldn't be able to judge our self worth with how many "likes" we have.
