Hank ***New Interview***
Hank is a great band out of the Maryland/DC area. They have a great live set and have shard the stage with a bunch of great bands. They have so far released an awesome EP, some demos and in the future an album on the way. They are also planning on a tour in the summer. I got the band to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
Hi everybody we're Hank, we're a three piece from Southern Maryland.
How did the band start?
We were all good friends that had played music together on many occasions in the past. Mark and I(Will) played in a band together three years before.
How did you come up with the name?
It was randomly selected. We sat around eating pizza trying to think of names and that one was the shortest, easiest one to remember.
Who would you say are your influences?
Our influences vary. We've been influenced by almost every sub-genre of punk. Everything from Hot Water Music to the Descendents. We've been compared to early 90's punk/emo bands such as Crimpshine and Jawbreaker. Those have definitely been a big influence on us too.
What is the punk scene like in Maryland?
The scene here is very DIY. We play a lot of basements, living rooms, and we book/organize/promote almost all of the shows ourselves. There's a lot of other good music scenes around us too like the D.C./Baltimore/Virginia Hardcore/Punk scene.
Describe the song writing process...
Mark, TJ, or I will have one idea that we share with each other. We try our best to work together and make it sound the way we imagine it, but usually end up coming up with something a lot more unique and better than we originally thought. Especially since we put the EP out, we've been working harder at varying every song. We hate to be repetitive and follow the Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus format.
You released 'Regret This One', tell us about the EP...
Regret This One is our first EP. We put it out ourselves. Our good friend Liam recorded it in his basement. The main theme of the EP is growing up. I guess you could say it's sort of a "coming-of-age" story. Songs pertain to things such as our life experiences/our reactions to them, depression, apathy, nostalgia, and relationships in general.
What else have you released?
We had a few demos before the EP. They're all gone now. They were pretty rough. We demo every song before we record a song on something we actually release on an EP/LP.
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We've played with a lot of different bands. Mostly from our local scene and the East Coast including The Scandals, Figure/Ground, The Usual, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, Slingshot Dakota, Handguns, and we are opening for Coke Bust in a little over two weeks.
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
If we had to choose one, it would be small clubs, but mainly we love to play shows in basements, garages, and living rooms. As long as the room is full and the kids are into it, we're happy.
Have you toured?
No, but we possibly plan on doing our first East Coast tour in August.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Definitely The Scandals. Those guys are really nice and always know how to make the show a good time. But we love playing with our friends' local bands as well like Figure/Ground and Tigerscout.
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Our favorite place to play is T.J.'s(our bassist) basement. Unfortunately we can't play shows there anymore because the last show we played was really big and kids were parking all over the place. The neighbors weren't too happy...
What do you see is the future of Hank?
We plan to do a full length and probably a few splits and EPs before we're done. As long as things go well as they are now and we're having fun we'll be around!
How can people contact the band?
People can contact us at all of these places!(Preferably our e-mail)
