On Trial UK ***New Interview***
On Trial UK are legends in their own right. Blasting out of the UK. They have had many different line-ups which is has lead to many live shops, but only a few releases and a full length. They have a great live set and have played it at mnay Rebellion Fests. They have also toured on several times. I got Jonny to tell their story...
Introduce yourself…
I'm Jonny Wah Wah, lead singer, guru and mind manipulator in On Trial UK.
How did the band start?
I was in a band called Glueball before this and when this went quiet I got a few people together to play some of the songs that I needed to be heard.
How did you come up with the name?
I shape my life so that I am always putting myself on trial in one respect or another... And the UK bit because we are from the UK and do not want to be confused with any inferior bands with the same name!
Who would you say are your influences?
So many, from the Sex Pistols to Husker Du to Nirvana to Motorhead to Nick Drake to Abba to Glen Campbell...
What is the punk scene like in the UK?
The punk scene is full of a lot of judgemental youngsters who will realise it only when their life experience becomes more rounded, the actual music scene in general is always healthy in the UK, we have the climate that makes us hate and love in extremity on an almost daily basis so we will always be creative, good or bad who cares, I have an equal amount of anger as happiness in me and I love both!
Describe the song writing process...
Idea, either song title, subject or character, get into song in my head and when the emotion that most feels right with the idea a tune usually comes then bash it out with the band until we get a song.
If someone in the band comes up with a tune then I just get into character and an idea usually feels right almost straight away, sometimes it's like I'm taken over... But it's usually just feelings coming through from past lives....
You recently released "Crack in the Box", tell us about the album...
It actually more of a collection of different line ups of On Trial over the last 4 years, there is around 10 musicians on it in all, it's an album that dares you to think and not just intellectually but also basically, we are just as much an animal as a human being..... The battle between love and hate, good and evil... It's eternal and will never be won ...
What else have you released?
A couple of singles but the new album should be out in the new year and will probably be called "There is now a New Moral Code " or maybe "Neuro Law".
Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
We have played the Rebellion festival around 7 or 8 times so technically played with all the punk bands going , but some great bands in bars who i can never recall their names , i will put eveything up on line when i work out how to put stuff on my web site! lol
Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
I like both as long as there is a crowd in front of you without any spaces!
Have you toured?
Yes but this line up is yet to go on tour, there are a few offers coming in for next year.
Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Not really and no one type of band musically either, I enjoy gigs just as much when we dont go down well as when we are carried on shoulders like gods!
Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
Again no, I like new places all the time.
What do you see is the future of On Trial UK?
To be able to play and record full time , we would seriously come out with a new album every 6 months if we could afford to do so , we have so much to say!
How can people contact the band?
www.jonnywahwah.com stick with it i'm still trying to motivate myself to learn how to do it , and ontrial@hotmail.co.uk , anyway if you think we are great you will find us ! old school like , come to my house or a gig , bring beer and wine and you might get a life changing moment....
