Shidiots ***New Interview***

Shidiots are an awesome punk band out of Omaha. They have an awesome live set and have shared the stage with a lot of really great bands. They also have 3 pretty good releases out. I got Blick to tell their story...

Introduce yourself…
My name is Blick Jagger. I play bass and sing in the punk band The Shidiots. I wrote the social/political/stupid songs in the band.
There is: Greg - Guitar, Vox. Danatee- Guitar, Vox. The Nachoman - Beating the skins.

How did the band start?
I had a concept a few years back to start a punk/hardcore cover band. I was aware that cover bands made more money around Omaha than most original bands. I had a few friends that were convinced it was a good idea and the ball was rolling. We used to cover mostly 80's and 90's bands like Fear, Descendents, Uk Subs, The Nobodys, The Queers, Nofx, Black Flag. Lots of bands from that era. The band kind of evolved out of that since venues still didn't want to pay for a PUNK cover band, so we started doing original music. I talked my friend Nacho Man into playing drums for us and I got bumped up to bass. (I played drums when we did covers.)

How did you come up with the name?
We were all simply huge fans of the show Trailer Park Boys. Mr. Lahey calls the boys Shidiots in season 3 or 4 I believe. We thought it was perfect.

Who would you say are your influences?
Shit, probably every punk band ever. Currently I dig Leatherface, The GC5, Snuff, The Flatliners, The Queers just about everything in between. I love a lot of local bands like Cordial Spew, Eastern Turkish (RIP), Officially Terminated, Filthy Fresh and The Scumbags, Shaken Babies. Pretty much anyone we have ever played with. Check out Dun Bin Had, Bent Left. It would take way too much time to go through them all.

What is the punk scene like in Omaha?
It's kind of weird. I'm really not to concerned about what it is/was/going to be. I enjoy playing shows where people show up. All ages shows are usually a winner. But at the same time we all love to play shows at the Hideout because it's just a melting pot of cool people.

Describe the song writing process...
For me, I'll think of a line or a melody and mold a song around that. Sometimes I can write a whole song without putting the notebook down, sometimes I can't. I'll write out root notes for the song that is in my head, then we play it. Pretty simple if I'm lucky.

What have you released?
Kissing Hands and Shaking Babies (Circa 10?)
Smells Like Shit (2011)
Trailer Shit EP (2012)
And we are working on our next recording as I'm doing this. Tentatively titled "Sinkers and Floaters."

Who are some of the bands you have done shows with?
I wouldn't be surprised if we have played 100 shows with Cordial Spew. Love those dudes, all super nice and in this for the right reasons. Well I guess I'll try: SOJH, The Black Hawks, Eastern Turkish, Shaken Babies, Pour Habit, The Queers, The Riptides, Kepi Ghouli, Bent Left, KGB, Weed Scum, Under the Black Sails, One for the Outcasts, The Rackatees, The Right Now. So many good bands I'm overwhelmed by the question.

Do you prefer to do shows at large venues or small clubs?
Anything anywhere, we aren't picky nor should we be.

Have you toured?
We have done some out of town stuff, but no major tour yet. Plans are this summer a 2 week tour with some weekend getaway adventures. Let's put up a prayer on this one!

Is there a favorite band you like to do shows with?
Cordial Spew. They bring the noise and enthusiasm and a great show. And Doug Decker (CS's drummer) does most of our recording at Anytime Studios. He does fantastic work at musician pricing if you know what I mean. Oh and Jay Bacon fixes Greg's broken equipment haha.

Is there a favorite place you like to do shows at?
The Hideout, The Sandbox, The Lair. Wherever, whenever.

What do you see is the future of Shidiots?
Older, fatter. But hopefully not slower. I like to push forward, whether it be recording, touring or playing shows. Never stop.

How can people contact the band?
Check out our http://www.reverbnation.com/theshidiots Look us up on facebook. Come see a show. Ask for our numbers, whatever. I'd like to think we are very approachable people. Thanks to everyone who support The Shidiots and local music. We are grateful. But not dead. Yet.
